About the role: We’re seeking an experienced Senior Property Advisor to play a pivotal role in managing Selwyn District Council’s property transactions and providing expert advice across acquisitions, disposals, commercial leasing, easements, and Reserves and Public Works Act processes. As part of the Acquisitions, Disposals and Leasing team, you’ll collaborate closely with internal teams, external stakeholders, and consultants to deliver high-quality property outcomes that support Council’s strategic plans and community projects. No two days are the same — you’ll move seamlessly between acquisitions, disposals, commercial leasing, advisory work, and hands-on project support across a diverse range of property activities. In this role you will:
  • Be a trusted advisor, providing clear and practical property advice to internal teams, project partners and external stakeholders.
  • Lead and support the investigation, management and disposal of surplus reserve, freehold and commercial Council land.
  • Assist with land acquisitions, easements and Public Works Act requirements for infrastructure, roading, walking/cycling and other Council projects.
  • Carry out commercial leasing and help manage Council’s commercial, community and grazing licences, as well as rental properties.
  • Navigate Reserves Act processes including classifications, revocations and leasing arrangements.
  • Provide sound property input into LIMs, PIMs and resource consent applications.
  • Work collaboratively with committees, consultants and project teams to progress property transactions and resolve issues.
  • Support subdivision projects, marketing and sales activities as needed.
  • Keep property data accurate and up to date, working closely with the AMIS team.
  • Assist with road stoppings under the Local Government Act and Public Works Act.
    • Manage approvals for drone use on Council land.
    • Contribute to wider property team administration and lend a hand wherever needed.
About you: You’re a confident property professional with strong analytical skills and an understanding of the legislative frameworks that underpin local government property work. You’ll be comfortable managing multiple tasks, building strong relationships, and delivering timely, well-reasoned advice. You will also have:
  • Solid experience in land and property management, acquisitions/disposals, commercial leasing, or a property-related legal role.
  • Experience working with contractors and consultants.
  • Strong digital literacy and confidence with property information systems.
  • The ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach.
